The greatest run in American Idol history has ended.

Here he is, Sanjaya Malakar, just a normal kid with a background so typical of many youths today — a family with divorced parents, living day to day in an increasingly difficult world — thrust into the spotlight on the most popular show on Earth — and he shines. He became the most talked about Idol in the 6-year history of the show, and he held himself with dignity in the face of relentless adversity. There is so much we can learn from how Sanjaya handled himself on this show.

It pains me to think that there are so many of you out there who so wanted to take Sanjaya’s smile away and have him cry like he did tonight. Some of you even wanted his fans to get crushed. This is just a reminder of how cynical our society has become these days. We could use a lot more Sanjaya’s in the world — fearless, passionate, joyful. We knew exactly who Sanjaya was on this show. And he gave us everything he could possibly give in his performances. Some of you may have found it funny or a travesty, but he gives me hope.

I wouldn’t be blogging about American Idol for 3 years now if it was merely a singing competition. It is about rooting for the singer we are most greatly attached to, not finding the best “vocalist” — it’s always clear who that is on Day 1. Every one of the contestants who have appeared on this show has been cast to appeal to all sorts of tastes in American society, be it the little girls, middle-aged women, or male doctors who like to look at legs. I am not surprised that in this blog, people have found common ground with others via the Idols they admire.

This year, in Melinda Doolittle, those who have stayed in the sidelines too long in search of a second chance finally have someone to root for. I think she will win. But whoever does win in a few weeks will only be an afterthought in Idol mythology. American Idol Season 6 already belongs to Sanjaya.

i felt bad for Sanjaya as it is. Atleast now he will move on. Even now at this young an age he has achieved a lot and has so many doors of opportunity open for him. I give a standing applause to Sanjaya to show courage and face the world everyweek even though he knew half of America hated him.

Now he will go ahead and sign contracts and commercials with peace and maybe some movies

I love Jordin too, but I seriously don’t know if I’m going to watch the rest of the season. No one had pulling power like OUR BABY…maybe I’ll watch just to be able to get a glimpse of him in the audience.

I honestly never believed they or the Stern bimbos were keeping his votes up there. They like to take credit– until they fail. That’s weird how Sanjaya is all of a sudden eliminated without being in the bottom 3 (i don’t know if he’s been in the bottom 3 before; but at least he hasn’t for weeks). It’s also funny that 38 million votes came in and American Idol had the most top 7 votes ever. America was really pushing to have their favorites to stay over Sanjaya.

Now that I think about it…While I will miss the excitement of wondering what he would do…the thought of any more brutality toward him would have been to much.
The juxtoposition of Simons(old) awful cynical performance/comments/eye rolls, and Sanjayas (young)open and positive vibe will linger.

So at least this is something to cheer up lots of people out there. To be honest, I don’t like or hate him, he’s just like those normal kids out there: voice, look, personality, stage performance… So he’s extremely lucky to get this far

To be fair, I don’t think Sanjaya was treated rudely. I think he was given a “starring” role this season and he held it as long as he could. Simon saying his performance was terrible is not any more rude than when he made fun of Clay post-GREASE performance (and undeservingly so, IMO). They are there to be judged. In the “real” music world, Sanjaya would never have had this much exposure so let’s wish him well and hope that he gets a lot of commercials and air time… and let’s hope he gets to promote more than his hair. :>

We will remain in the “Universe of Sanjaya”, at my house. He is our American Idol for this season. In the end this is just a TV show, it doesn’t define who a person is…nor what they become in their lives. We know Sanjaya will follow his dreams and be successful in his own right.
We support Sanjaya – -always. We find one sense of peace this night, in that America can now become obsessed with another AI contestant and spend all their waking hours …all their energy in hating the new victim. And sadly, that most likely will happen…

Sanjaya will be missed he was a sweet kid. I just saw him on a fox interview(well it was from right after the show) and Sanjaya said that he was never into country music and will see what happens next) He still had tears in his eyes. One thing for sure there will never be another Sanjaya he was the real deal and in the song he sang it said something like lets spread love instead of hate. That is so true and that message should apply to all especially to those who actually hated Sanjaya.

I think I feel just as sad as you do Rickey, but cheer up maybe you’ll meet him when he’s on Regis And Kelly. It’s about time Sanjaya gets to meet his #1 fan.

it is ridiculous to say that those who wanted Sanjaya to go wanted this to happen to “take away his smile and cause him to cry”. Is that what you wanted to happen to everyone else that has left the competition? I don’t think so. People cry when they leave the show because it’s a stressful and incredibly hard process. Just because we don’t share your obsession with him does not mean that we had malicious thoughts about him either. I think Sanjaya is a beautiful person with a light that will shine way after Idol is over. I know this is not the last we will hear about him for years to come, and predict with his fan base will become the new face of MANY products/shows.

That being said, I DO think every person that is left deserves to be there over him right now, and just because that is my opinion does not condone such a statement from you.

Sweet Rickey. I am sorry your favorite is gone from Idol. My heart aches more for you now than it did when ACE left during AI5 but, as we have seen with ACE, 7 is a good number. I can only imagine how giddy you will be if Sanjaya does the same meet-n-greets like ACE has been doing.

WHAT – I took note of the long hug between Lakisha and Sanjaya as well. I believe they were both in need of it. There were streaks down Lakisha’s face when they first came back, before they even gave the results. I believe they were both frozen in that moment. I don’t think that the others not crying meant there were bad vibes between any of them. Their faces were very solemn and when they showed the group after Lakisha joined them, Melinda was holding her like the mother of the group which I figure they’ve made her to be.

That said, I liked Sanjaya for his spirit, his smile, and the fun he had on stage but, truth… it was time.

Probably one of the saddest days in Idol history, at least, for me. I mean no Sanjaya wasn’t the best singer in the competition, but I became attached to him as well. I don’t know. I was praying hard for him, but I guess sometimes things aren’t meant to be. I thought it would have been great for him to stay a few weeks longer. Like about a week or two. I just wanted him to make Top 6 for “Idol Gives Back” thats all. After that I was content with when he left since I know it would’ve been hard for him to win it and I felt others deserved the win initially. But…..I feel he will have a great career ahead of him in music. YOU JUST WATCH!. Rickey you have been a GREAT supporter of Sanjaya, I think thats great. I’m really saddened to see Sanjaya go. I’ll be honest, as a straight dude, it really breaks MY heart that he’s now gone. I just wish things were switched around and Kiki went home. Next week won’t be as exciting for me as it would’ve been with Sanjaya around. I hope he comes on Wednesday for their special at least. Man….I can’t believe I’m that torn. The last time I felt this for Idol was when Elliott left. Wow. J-Hud was first….Sanjaya is next. He’ll be alright.

Thanks again Rickey – West Coast here, so just saw the singout and wow, his video was amazing. What a persona. This season has been GREAT already, don’t care what anyone says – what a nice group of talented kids – it’s just a great show. I like them all more each week. Maybe I’m just more attached because I’ve watched it from the start for the first time this year, but they all seem really attached to each other – it’s just nice. And they are damn talented (repeating myself, but I’m just sick of people going on and on about the lack of talent).
I’m looking forward to seeing what Sanjaya comes up with next!

I don’t mean to be all ironic and bring up what Sanjaya sang against tonight, but…his hair! I think there’s something beautiful about the continuity and full cycle of it all:

Sanjaya’s hair looks exactly as it did when he first made it to Hollywood. He’s had crazy ups and downs during his entire run (hair, emotion, performance); he’s had his days when he probably felt on top of the world, and others when he’s felt like shit.

But now, at the end of it, he’s just being returned to who he always was: a natural, charming floppy-haired kid who will go far.

We’ll see you on the other side, bb.

But please don’t feel that Sanjaya cried b/c ppl were so mean to him or all of the negativity. He cried b/c an intense journey has just ended and I’m sure it was a very special experiene for him.

He’ll be all over the media starting tomorrow. So you can enjoy him via a different avenue.

Awww. Poor Sanjaya, it totally broke my heart to see him crying like that!! He’s a sweet and adorable guy and made this season so much better and entertaining for me. At the beginning of this season, I couldn’t stand Sanjaya. I did like his audition, but after that I didn’t understand why he was still in the competition.

Man, how my opinion has changed over the past few weeks. I thought it was funny that he was staying in the competition. Then, I really began to enjoy Sanjaya – the hair, the performances, the entertainment. I even voted for him many times the past couple of shows – over one hundred times just last night. I think the show will be boring without him, which is why I probably won’t be watching.

I am really disappointed that he is gone. I think he has handled himself very well throughout this whole thing. He has probably learned a lot from this experience, and being only 17 years old, he will probably continue to learn from this experience throughout his life. I wish him the best with whatever he chooses to do next in life!

But sorry.. He had to go. He wasn’t right for the competition and it was far past his time to get cut.

Just like a few people here, many others today will have tears in their eyes too. Not because they’re sad, but because they’re so happy now that the real competition can begin. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate him at all. He’s just an average kid: his voice is just like a decent karaoke type voice, childlike singing voice and he’s not even entertaining like William Hung. He’s just a well mannered kid. That’s all! Scott Savol & Chicken Little have better voice. He’s so extremely lucky to be this far!

I like him too and I’m gonna miss that wacky-hair kid. He is not the best performer on AI (though he has a very good voice), but he steal people’s attention by showing his smile, hairstyles, stage performances, personality and… his family! People sometimes forget his singing talent.

All loves and hatred go to him actually come from this ‘attracted’ feeling.
People who love Sanjaya can’t wait to see him every week: what kind of song/music will he perform? what kind of hairdo?
And people who dislike him also can’t wait to see their I-hate-this-kid one, and next, they got something from Sanjaya to ridicule.

I just wish he still there at AI shows every week, even he’s not singing, just sits among the audience EVERY WEEK with different hairstyles and wave to camera when they shoot him… hahaha… wadaya think?

Rickey, don’t get your hopes down. It’s not “over.” Sanjaya is still alive. He may not be on the show anymore, but he sure isn’t going anywhere. He’ll be on all the talk shows, he’ll go somewhere. I personally didn’t think he was all that well-suited for the competition, but he is suited for the entertainment industry. Sanjaya is not gone, he’s just getting started.

Rickey, your reaction video brings me back to the emotions I was feeling when Chris Sligh went home. I truly feel for you. Your post is beautiful and so true, Sanjaya managed to shine in the face of adversity. As Sligh reminded us on his blog, we need to all say a prayer for Sanjaya ans he ventures into the negavite world of the media… unfortunately, they’ll be swarming him like vultures. Sligh survived it, but he’s over ten years older than Sanjaya and could handle it- I’m hoping Sanjaya is OK. Poor kid. Thanks for being great, Rickey! and hang in there.

I feel that he should have been gone prior to now, but I’m glad he made the impact he made – it should lead to wonderful things for him and a totally different life than he had before.

I know people have their opinions, and for some reason people seem to think that they need to gloat, but really – is this the place to do it? Obviously, Rickey loved Sanjaya and is brokenhearted – he created this site for us to enjoy each week. I don’t feel it is appropriate for people to come into “his house” and gloat about the elimination of his favorite. He deserves more respect than that.

There are other places to go and gloat – if that’s something you feel you just need to do. I think everyone needs to remember that he’s a kid – someone’s son. If you have kids, he could be your kid, etc.

Although I’m quoting from Rickey’s comments, my comments are not pointed directly at Rickey personally but the entire Sanjaya Universe (lame). “…thrust into the spotlight on the most popular show on Earth…”, you’re joking right? I’d say jumped headlong into the spotlight is more like it. “…he held himself with dignity in the face of relentless adversity.” It must be tough to exist under this type of ‘adversity’. Kind of like living in Iraq or Darfur right about now, huh. Get a friggin’ grip! Your favorite boy was voted off, sack up and be a man about it and pick another favorite. I’m sorry to be the one to tell you all this, but Sanjaya may be successful at something in the entertainment industry, however it won’t be as a recording artist. Oh I suppose he could be a one hit wonder, but that’s the best he can hope for regarding singing. I will begin with a comment to one of the existing comments.

Melinda was crying too. Melinda and Lakisha both seemed to really like Sanjaya. If you have paid attention to their interactions throughout, the 3 of them seemed close. Can’t wait to hear exit interviews and such to see how he’s holding up.

Rickey! Thank you for posting this beautiful message. I didn’t know anything about his family life. We forget, he’s only 17. For someone that young, he’s got a bright future ahead of him, and I will miss wondering “what they heck will Sanjaya do this week?” His time was up, though. I felt – if he stayed a week or two longer, the show would suffer, as talented (he/she could win) people were sent home, instead. Lakisha, although, recently lackluster, has the ability to win. I feel this was the perfect time for Sanjaya to head on home. When the top 12 began, I said, “he will make #7.” I thought I would be wrong after latin night. GREAT JOB, SANJAYA!

About his exit… I just wish it wasn’t so “FINALLY! YES! HE’S GONE!” I feel for him. I hope to hear things from him after the tour. He needs a little vocal training, maybe, that’s about it. I will always remember his cute audition, in which he indirectly showed up his sister.

I really hate what they did to Sanjaya. Imagine, going to the extent of having to stage a hunger strike just to see him eliminated.

Man you’re right ricky. Its kinda funny after Simon gave the WORST comment he’s ever given sanjaya, he gets the boot. I think he said something like “You shouldn’t be in this competition”…and out he goes. Simon is very pissed at this and i know why too. He makes a living on deciding what OTHER people will like and what people don’t. And the fact that people are voting for sanjaya and LIKE him simply because he is so sweet, nice, and funny irks him i think. Not so much the fact that there are better singers, but the fact that his “authority” over what people do and don’t like has been hindered. Meh, in my opinion.

Your post was dead on though. Sanjaya’s run on AI…as entertaining as he was, was more than just that. The adversity and cruel hostility tells me something about the media and public at large.

Can’t wait for the interviews! Sanjaya is a class act!

I stop watching AI since after the second season (Reuben and Clay)( I still think that AI Producers have the final say who goes and who stay)I got interested watching American Idol again only because of Sanjaya. He made the show more interesting and He dared to be different.I was sad too when he got voted off (I don’t believe for one minute his fans turned against him just because of one night? ) His elimination from the show is only part of his journey. The show just prepared him how to face adversity with dignity and honor.At the tender age of 17 He’ll be ready for the next journey. We will hear more from him. Amen Ricky! Thanks so much for your blog! I was so sad to hear Sanjaya was booed at a baseball game. I admire him for doing all he did with the instrument he has, sparkling so, consistently speaking and demonstrating love, and the gentleness in his mischeviousness (again demonstrating love).

I thought Sanjaya’s reasons for choosing “Let’s give em something to talk about” were brilliant, as was his improvisation with the lyrics in his farewell song. I never voted for him (I voted for whom I thought were the better vocal performers: Melinda, Jordin, and once Blake), but applaud and cheer him nonetheless.
I hope he goes on to a huge Tiger Beat and Disney movie career, and I’m sure his CDs will sell! (I bought one of his AI studio performances). I hope he reads your blog! Bravo, Sanjaya! Namasté!

HI,

In this morning af brutal media, it is nice to see someone who recognizes Sanjaya for what he is. I would not say he was my favorite, but he was the one I most wanted to see each week in this most boring of seasons.

Who knows how his album, and there will be an album, will turn out. He had curage and strength and humor that was sorely lacking in prior contestants. I think he was an excellent idol material in just standing up to the garbage thrown at him just on the idol show. Simon should be forced to look at his joyous face and then read the ratings. I find this year very boring and it is ingteresting that the performance ratings keep dropping as they are starting to protool some of the contestants to make them sound better (Blake, I am looking at you).

The interesting thing about the ratings this year is that the results show is out drawing the performance shows indicating that the stars are a draw and the contestants fade more into the background. (started at last years finale) I think that Idol is forgetting that the water cooler moments are performed by the contestants not the sometimes lipsyncing guest stars. Shark, I think you have been jumped.

sanjaya will be missed greatly i gotta say i was one of the ppl who didn’t like sanjaya at first but after watching him for a while he kind of grows on you. this season was so borring with out sanjaya its pretty funny ppl are saying it was him that was ruining the season , when in accuality it was him who saved this season. no one would care as much for idol this year if he wasn’t in it. if you saw david letterman and dave from vftw said it best , if your good it doesn’t really matter what spot you finish in idol your going to make it after idol no matter what and sell copies of your cd. it would have just been awsome to see sanjaya win a recordinig contract. but , it was pretty cool to see sanjaya come from bein this unknown shy lil kid to bein one of the most talked about names in this country. like him or not sanjaya became bigger then even american idol could handle.

I only watched the Idol this year because of that kid…I think I lost interest. I really don’t care who will become the Idol.

Not that I ever thought Sanjaya would get as far as he did, but it was fun watching him and his stubborn struggle.
His last performance was not good. But I disagree with what so many say, that he has no talent. Plus, he carried himself really well, all this time.
Hugs to Rickey – don’t worry, Sanjaya will be back on tour. My only worry is, will the haters try to disrupt his parts of the performance. I’m really worried that there will be booing or something.

Stop the hatered people!!! He is a human being, a beautiful young man, with whole life in front of him. He is genuinely entertaining, in a good way. No need to stomp him. He doesn’t desereve to be treated with cruelty and disrespect.
Sanjaya, know that you are loved – let it give you strength to shake off the stupid abuse. Go on with your life, keep your head high, and don’t forget to smile!

I cried last night too, a lot! Not because I was sad but because I was so happy; tears of joy and as you all noticed, right after Ryan announced that he was going home, the whole audience also cheered in happiness because finally, the real competition can begin! Hahahh… Actually, just kidding! Seriously, I’m not Sanjaya hater because from the beginning, I could tell who’s good, who’s not. From the audition, I think his sister has better voice (and she’s hot!) but he’s not too bad. And when he was in Hollywood, some people hate him because his showmanship was boring, he was just so stiff and I think that it’s the main reason most people hate him since then. While most people started to hate him, as for me, I still didn’t hate him because I think he was just an unexperienced little kid but at least his voice is not so bad; so I still kept my opinion neutral, totally based on the facts. But then, just like most of other contestant, he improved slowly, but the further he was in, the big difference we could see between him and the rest of the group. Then, all of a sudden, I saw the little girl on TV cried when he performed and it was not even his best performance! That drove me nuts! But it turned out that she cried for everybody during the whole show, even until the end of the show when Ryan asked her to go on stage. So then, I knew that she was just a big fan of the show, in another word, everyone there was her idols! Hahahh! Anyway, some people talked like he was a biggest hero or something. That’s so bullcrap! First of all, most of those didn’t know him personally. Secondly, and most importantly, no one would even mentioned that the reason they like him is because he has better voice than the top 12 because they knew that his voice is good BUT NOT THAT GOOD AS THE REST OF THE GROUP. So, why do they like him? Because he’s entertaining? Come one, give me a break, his moves are still very awkward and stiff. Let assume that he was not from American Idol, when he performed like that at his concert, do you think girls will act crazy, jump out of their chairs and dance with him? I don’t think so. So they like him because he dare to be different just because of the Mohawk hair? So what, no big deal. Who knows, maybe that’s not even his idea, maybe it’s one of Hollywood hair stylists’ idea because his hair is long so they just want him to look a little different. Look at Haley, she has legs and she wear short, short short. THAT is dare to be different! As for his personality, he’s just a well mannered kid, nothing really stands out. Like Melinda, she’s so mellow (watch her audition from the beggining) or William Hung (“I have no regret because I already tried my best”) THAT’s what we call personality that stands out! Sanjaya is just like the rest of the group in the show, he didn’t act or say something special that makes us to remember (remember last year, when Paris Banette was still with the group, she was the one that cried like crazy whenever someone got booted off? THAT’s the one that stay in our memory!) Come one people! Stop acting like he’s your biggest idol or hero because then, everyone will be everybody’s heroes or idols and that is bull! Hahahahh…. Just wake up and smell the coffee! He’s a good kid and I admire him that he has a better voice than me (or alot of kids out there) when I was at his age (but is he better than Jordin? Paris Benette, Lisa Tucker, or even Kevin Covais from previous season?) and I wish him luck in the future. But believe me, he’s not my idol or hero in my heart because I have way higher standards than that

I kind of felt bad for him. He didn’t deserve all the negative things that were said about him. But, it happened, and, that is that.

It kinda hurts me that he had to go home.
i developed a kinda crush on him (i’m a few yrs younger than he is)
and idk i’ve never liked someone liek him before.
he’s just so charming and so cute!
it hurt rlly bad when he had to go home,
cuz i was really attached to him and

And on elimination night i was PRAYiNG that he wasnt going home,

I live on the west coast, so i was so desperate to find out if he was leaving.
