Maggie Smith has died. She was 89.
The legendary actress died at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin said in a statement:
“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.
“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.
“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”
Maggie Smith won two Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards and a Tony Award during her decades long career which started when she was 17. Her final role was 2023’s “The Miracle Club.”
She was best known for playing Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies and Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the period drama “Downton Abbey”.
What a great run. She will be missed.
