X-Men Spinoff ‘Gambit’ to Release in 2016
The release date has been revealed for the latest in what’s turning into a pretty big cinematic universe for the X-Men.
The upcoming spinoff centered on Gambit has now been confirmed to release on October 7, 2016, making it the THIRD X-Men film that will be released in 2016 after Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse.
Channing Tatum is in the lead role as the roguish Remy LeBeau himself, from a script by Robocop scribe Joshua Zetumer and a treatment by franchise veteran Chris Claremont. Tatum replaces Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Here’s the list of release dates for all the upcoming X-Men franchise films confirmed for the coming years:
Deadpool – February 12, 2016
X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27, 2016
Gambit – October 7, 2016
Wolverine 3 – March 3, 2017
Untitled X-Men Movie – July 13, 2018
All in all, Fox is building up a cinematic universe of their own to rival Marvel’s, since they don’t seem all that interested in selling the rights to these characters back to Marvel anyway. And hey, given what a big success this X-Men prequel franchise has been, and how far they’ve been able to take the Wolverine character as a solo film-headlining character, it’s no surprise they’re doubling down on this X-Men continuity. It’s not exactly a bad idea either, since the X-Men are pretty much the only other team that can rival The Avengers for big-screen hero team-ups — at least until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits.
So, basically, Hollywood’s superhero craze isn’t dying down. Not even a little bit.
