WWE Twitter Accounts Hacked In Strange Security Test
After NXT TakeOver on Saturday night, WWE apparently suffered a takeover of a different kind. Several WWE Twitter accounts began releasing strange tweets as the night rolled on, and it became quickly apparent that the accounts had been hacked.
It didn’t take long for hacker group OurMine to take credit for the hack. But they didn’t do it for malicious reasons, it seems. At least, not for reasons more malicious than self-promotion. The hacker group apparently has a habit of taking over celebrity Twitter accounts in order to advertise their services, which include testing the security of social media and email accounts in order to identify vulnerabilities.
Considering Mark Zuckerberg and Wikipedia co-founders Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger have also had their accounts hacked by OurMine, WWE isn’t exactly alone in having a grievance against these guys. And yet, they should probably be thrilled that it was these guys and not someone with more malicious intent. Seriously, this could have ended so much worse than it did.
