WWE Summerslam 2016 Spoilers: Brock Lesnar Opponent Revealed?
On the July 4th Monday Night Raw, WWE announced that the Summerslam 2016 opponent for Brock Lesnar would be revealed on Smackdown this Thursday. This, despite the fact that Brock has a fight at UFC 200 this Saturday that could leave him in no shape to compete at Summerslam. But hey, plans potentially being derailed hasn’t stopped WWE in the past, and it probably won’t stop them again in the future. Case in point, the Summerslam opponent for Brock Lesnar has already reportedly leaked!
Reddit user MisterKnowItAll1, who claims to be an insider with the company, is reporting that Randy Orton will be announced as Brock Lesnar’s opponent. Of course, this begs the question: why the hell would we listen to some random Reddit user? Well, the big reason this is being taken somewhat seriously is because MisterKnowItAll1 was the same person who broke the news that Shane McMahon would be The Undertaker’s opponent at Wrestlemania. It was a story virtually no one believed. And yet, that’s exactly what happened.
To add to the rumor, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer stated that while he can’t confirm that it’s Orton, the prevailing thought at the moment is that it is. Granted, both Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez, on the latest edition of Observer Radio, didn’t seem to view the match as a great idea. In particular, Bryan noted that it’s generally not a good thing to put a guy with neck and shoulder problems into a match where he’ll likely be suplexed half a dozen times or more. And I can’t say I disagree with the assessment, nor Dave’s assertion that WWE really ought to have waited an extra week to announce Lesnar’s opponent, since they have no way of knowing what will happen at UFC 200. Brock could get hurt, or he could steamroll Mark Hunt in such a way that WWE will want to jettison the Orton match and put Brock in the main event. Anything could happen, so why lock yourself into a plan now? It just comes across as a bit stubborn.
That said, Orton vs. Lesnar is one of those matches people have been clamoring for since Lesnar first returned to WWE in 2012. If nothing else, it should be a memorable match, particularly if we get that “F-5 into an RKO” spot I’ve seen people predicting for years.
But what do you think about Brock Lesnar potentially taking on Randy Orton at Summerslam 2016? Sound off in the comments!
