The Smackdown spoilers are in for tonight’s show, and the Intercontinental championship takes center stage, as The Miz defends against Cesaro in the main event!
But there are some other marquee match-ups on tap for the show as well. Rusev defends the United States Championship against Kalisto in a rematch from Extreme Rules, Natalya looks for revenge against Dana Brooke, Alberto Del Rio takes on Zack Ryder in a Money in the Bank qualifier, and Fandango & Tyler Breeze team up to take on The Golden Truth in a grudge match. WWE SMACKDOWN SPOILERS FOR 05/26/2016
-Michael Cole opened the show with an interview segment featuring the Money In the Bank participants. Dean Ambrose kicks things off, but he’s eventually interrupted by Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Alberto Del Rio, the latter of whom vowed to become a two-time Money in the Bank winner.
-Alberto Del Rio defeated Zack Ryder by submission to the armbar to qualify for the Money In the Bank ladder match.
-Enzo Amore & Big Cass come out for a promo. The Dudleys interrupt the segment, and were challenged to a fight, on the spot. However, the Dudleys backed off and bailed.
-United States Champion Rusev defeated Kalisto with The Accolade in a rematch from Extreme Rules.
-Natalya defeated Dana Brooke via disqualification when Women’s Champion Charlotte interfered. Together, Charlotte and Dana Brooke put a beat down on Natalya.
-A.J. Styles spoke up in an interview, addressing his back-to-back losses at Extreme Rules and Monday Night Raw. He admitted that he doesn’t know what’s next for him.
-Fandango & Tyler Breeze defeated The Golden Truth.
-Seth Rollins came out for a promo hyping up his WWE World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns at Money In the Bank.
-In the main event, Intercontinental Champion The Miz defeated Cesaro to retain the title thanks to interference by Maryse.
Honestly, it’s kind of disappointing to see Cesaro come out on the losing end again, particularly since this only perpetuates the 50/50 booking philosophy that prevents midcarders from truly breaking through to the next level. With that said, I don’t think it was time for Miz to lose the title just yet, since I think he’s a guy who could do a lot with the title by going on a Honky Tonk Man-type run by being the beatable champion who keeps escaping with the belt somehow. I also think it could be bigger for Cesaro if he chases the title for a little while longer, and then finally gets his big win farther on down the line. Still, it can be disheartening to see a real talent like Cesaro get slotted right back into his old spot in the midcard. Here’s hoping his momentum builds in the weeks leading up to Money In the Bank, particularly since he’s in a unique position to be one of the standout stars of that match.
