WWE Smackdown Spoilers for 01/14/2016: Kalisto vs. Del Rio for the US Championship

WWE Smackdown has a new home on USA Network, and that means WWE is looking to boost the show’s profile with some big matches. Case in point, a United States championship rematch between new champ Kalisto, who won the title on Monday Night Raw in a surprise upset, and former champion Alberto Del Rio.

Also on the card for this week’s show is a tables match between the Dudleys and the Wyatt Family. This is the first tables match to air on Smackdown in several years, and it could serve as the culmination of the drawn-out feud between the Wyatts and the ECW faction. The Social Outcasts are also in eight-man tag-team action to promote the Royal Rumble match, Becky Lynch faces Brie Bella, and WWE Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose has a major announcement to make. Well, more like a demand. All in all, it sounds like a pretty good show. The episode, taped from the Cajundome in Lafayette, LA, will air tonight in Canada, and on Thursday night in the United States. WWE Smackdown Spoilers for 01-14-2016 Kalisto vs. Del Rio for the US Championship

-WWE Smackdown opened with Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose wanting a last man standing match with Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble. Sheamus then came out. Owens accepted the match and he and Sheamus attacked Ambrose until Neville made the save to lead to the main event.

-Dudleys beat Luke Harper & Erick Rowan in a tables match. After the match, Braun Strowman destroyed both Dudleys.

-Heath Slater & Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas & Adam Rose beat Jack Swagger & Zack Ryder & Goldust & Damien Sandow when Dallas pinned Ryder.

-Alberto Del Rio beat Kalisto to regain the U.S. title due to distraction from King Barrett.

-Becky Lynch beat Brie Bella.

-WWE Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose & Neville went to a double countout with Kevin Owens & Sheamus.

I really don’t see the point in switching the title to Kalisto just to give it back to Del Rio, although I can’t say I’m surprised they did this. That said, maybe it’s to build to a rubber match at the Royal Rumble. Regardless, I think they’re leaving a lot of money on the table with Kalisto. He could be so much more than just a guy who can sell masks and appeal to Latino audiences. He really could be the next Rey Mysterio, the underdog that endures because he’s innately likable. Those types of guys can draw if you let them, and I hope Kalisto gets that chance, even in spite of Vince McMahon’s “small guy” prejudices.

On the plus side, I’m REALLY stoked about the Ambrose/Owens Last Man Standing Match for the Royal Rumble. That has the potential to be awesome, particularly if they’re allowed to let loose out there. I certainly hope they get the chance to go all-out, because this could be the HHH/Rock Summerslam 98 moment for these two, where two midcarders on the brink mutually elevate themselves to superstar status with an incredible match.
