WWE Plans To Include LGBT Characters In Future Storylines

WWE is getting progressive! According to WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon, LGBT characters could soon become a part of WWE storylines and programming in the future. McMahon confirmed plans during an event hosted by Beyond Sport at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“We will integrate LGBT characters into our programming … and I do think there will be an opportunity to integrate some of those storylines in the near future,” McMahon stated.

Coincidentally enough, longtime employee and WWE legend Pat Patterson has just released his long-awaited autobiography, Accepted: How the First Gay Superstar Changed WWE. While Patterson’s sexuality never factored into his WWE career, he was a pioneer for gay wrestlers receiving acceptance in the locker room, to say nothing of how his ideas — such as the Royal Rumble match — are still in use today.

Granted, I’m not sure if including LGBT characters means they’ll be having straight wrestlers playing gay characters (a la the original conception of Goldust), or if they’ll actually add more LGBT stars to the roster. Either way, it should be interesting to see what the future holds for WWE, as they take sports entertainment in a new direction.

But what do you think of WWE’s decision to include LGBT characters? Sound off in the comments!
