WWE Introducing New Award for Hall of Fame 2016
WWE is introducing a brand new award for the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday night: The Legacy Award.
The news was leaked by a fan to F4WOnline, who posted an image of a commemorative Hall of Fame T-shirt that reveals the new award. The shirt, which is currently being sold in Dallas, makes mention of a Legacy Award, and includes images of several legendary wrestlers from the early and mid-20th century, many of whom never even worked for WWE (hell, some of these guys were retired before WWE was even created). Those on the shirt include Ed “Strangler” Lewis, Lou Thesz, Frank Gotch, George Hackenschmidt, Mildred Burke, Pat O’Connor and “Sailor” Art Thomas.
Strangely enough, these men are not considered Hall of Fame inductees like the others going into the Hall of Fame this Saturday. They’re simply being recognized, which begs the question of whether any relatives of these deceased legends will be on-hand. Honestly, while guys like Lewis and Gotch were instrumental in the popularization of professional wrestling as we know it today in North America, I’m not sure what the point of recognizing them is without inducting them into the Hall of Fame. I guess we’ll see how WWE proceeds with this on Saturday, and if this is an award they bring back next year, or if it’s a once-and-done.
With the Legacy Award revealed, the final list of honorees for the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2016 includes…
The Fabulous Freebirds
Big Boss Man
Joan Lunden (Warrior Award recipient)
Snoop Dogg (Celebrity inductee)
Ed “Strangler” Lewis, Lou Thesz, Frank Gotch, George Hackenschmidt, Mildred Burke, Pat O’Connor and “Sailor” Art Thomas (Legacy Award honorees)
