WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair Insists WWE Is Right About Roman Reigns
Two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair appeared on the Talk Is Jericho podcast with Chris Jericho to discuss how various topics, among them how WWE has handled the booking of Roman Reigns.
Naturally, Flair is a pretty huge fan of Reigns, declaring that he’s one of the company’s more versatile performers. Check out some of the interview excerpts below via Talk Is Jericho (H/T Wrestling Inc.):
“I think they struggled with him at first, but with Roman, they’ve got the best of both worlds. They’ve got a guy that one day can wrestle Seth Rollins and be the hottest bad guy in the [professional wrestling] business, which that match will be huge when they have it or he can go out and wrestle Hunter and whatever, right? He’s good! Yes, [he is versatile], which is a good thing, I think.”
Flair actually takes his praise of Reigns a bit further, saying WWE has been right about Reigns all along. In fact, Flair goes as far as to say that fans can’t boo him anymore.
“Look at the match him and AJ [Styles] had [at WWE Payback]. Holy cow! What a match. Start, restart, start, restart. And you know, AJ flies around. [Jericho] should know. He works [Jericho’s] style of work, but Roman hung right there with him for 30 minutes. Roman [has] got legs. It makes him a better performer. You can’t [boo him] anymore. But he just had to work hard to win them over. But the company just proves everybody right. They did the right thing. Bret [Hart], I just saw Bret the other day, but Bret was hammering the company for the way they treat Roman. Roman’s as happy as can be. Bret’s fine now too! As long as he can put the Sharpshooter on me, he’s happy.”
While Reigns has been improving in the ring and delivering great matches the past two months, I’m not sure it’s a great idea to tell fans you can’t boo a guy. WWE insisting that we shouldn’t be booing Reigns, and that we all secretly love him deep-down, is part of the reason why fans are rejecting him so sternly. I don’t even think it’s Reigns himself, so much as the stubbornness behind his push. I like Reigns well enough, and he definitely did keep up with AJ Styles on the past two pay-per-views, but his best matches are usually with performers more talented than he is. I don’t know how you see the past two AJ/Reigns matches and leave saying, “Wow, Reigns sure was great!” rather than “That AJ Styles is incredible!”
Reigns has talent, but WWE is actually doing a disservice to the guy by pretending there isn’t a problem. I’m not even saying you have to turn the guy heel, but just tell the announcers to ease up on the condescension about how we’re all really passionate about Reigns, and we’re just having fun booing him. Because I’d wager a guess that a lot of the people booing Reigns just genuinely don’t like him. And the longer WWE insists on telling fans they’re wrong for feeling that way, the longer they’re likely to rebel against this whole Reigns push.
But anyway, enough about my opinion. What are your thoughts on all this? Do you agree or disagree with what Ric Flair had to say? Sound off in the comments!
