VH1 Star Ahmad ‘Real’ Givens Dead at 33

VH1 has lost one of its own.

Reality star Ahmad ‘Real’ Givens has died at age 33 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. The news was confirmed by Real’s brother, Chance, with whom he starred on the dating series I Love New York, and the later spinoff, Real Chance of Love.

Real was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2013, and although things seemed to improve after surgery, the cancer eventually returned. His condition was further worsened after Real took a fall in January, an injury that confined him to bed for the last month of his life. By the end, he was having trouble with speech and vision.

“I’ll see you one day soon,” Chance posted online, in a tribute to his late brother. “We shall dance again in God’s kingdom forever and ever bro words can’t describe my pain world pray for me!”

This is a heartbreaker of a loss. Real was so vibrant and memorable in his brief reality TV spotlight, and the notion that he was no longer that same colorful person by the end is just tragic, to me. Cancer is such a loathsome illness.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Real’s family and friends during this trying time. It’s clear he was loved and will be missed.
