‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Renewed for Season 3 by Netflix
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt isn’t vanishing any time soon.
Yes, the glorious news is true: Netflix has renewed Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for Season 3. The second season premieres in April, and it’s among the more anticipated premieres of the new year, right up there with Netflix’s other big spring drama, Marvel’s Daredevil.
Of course, this is part of a strange journey for the comedy, which is executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The show, which centers on an upbeat young woman adjusting to life in the real world after spending years in a doomsday cult, was originally developed for NBC. However, Netflix picked up the show for two seasons on the spot after NBC opted to pass on it. Turns out, NBC ended up passing on an awards season favorite that, for all anyone knows, could have been their next 30 Rock. Then again, if NBC had gotten the series, it probably would have been killed either by schedule shuffling or their odd “special sneak preview” strategy, which basically amounts to premiering the first episode and then having the show vanish for a few weeks until the “official” premiere.
If nothing else, NBC missed out on one of the more genuinely hilarious sitcoms on TV, with an absolutely killer cast. Ellie Kemper, Titus Burgess, Jane Krakowski and guests like Jon Hamm and Fey herself made the first season a real treat, and Season 2 is shaping up to be more of the same (in the best possible way). Seriously, I can’t wait for April.
