UFC Fighter Mark Hunt Files Lawsuit Against WWE Star Brock Lesnar
It’s on now! UFC fighter Mark Hunt is going after WWE star Brock Lesnar and the entire MMA promotion.
Hunt has filed a civil suit against Lesnar, UFC president Dana White and the promotion itself in Nevada District Court. The lawsuit claims the defendants “affirmatively circumvented and obstructed fair competition for their own benefit” in addition to participating in fraud, racketeering, breech of contract, and unjust enrichment. Hunt is seeking financial relief for the damages he’s suffered, along with legal fees, and other damages that could be in the millions.
The lawsuit stems from Hunt’s fight against at UFC 200 against Lesnar, who was later revealed to have failed his USADA drug testing. This was the third time Hunt has had to step into the Octagon with someone who was later revealed to have been on banned substances. Of course, this lawsuit doesn’t appear as though it’ll have any effect on Hunt’s upcoming fight against Alistair Overeem at UFC 209. Still, Hunt is being pretty outspoken about this lawsuit, and how UFC brass allowed any of this to happen in the first place.
“I want the UFC to understand it’s not OK to keep doing what they’re doing,” Hunt said in a statement to ESPN.com. “They’re allowing guys to do this. They had a chance to take all the money from this guy, because he’s a cheater, and they didn’t. What message is that sending to the boys and girls who want to be a fighter someday? The message is, ‘You just have to cheat like this and it’s OK.’ In society, if you commit a crime, you pay. Why is it different in MMA? It’s hurt the business, so it’s even worse. They need to be held accountable for this.”
Ultimately, Hunt is putting his UFC career on the line with a lawsuit like this, since it’s hard to imagine he doesn’t suffer some blowback among UFC executives and fellow fighters. Then again, he could end up finding support from fighters who share his opinions. If nothing else, it takes balls for Hunt to sue his own employer while still cashing the paychecks. Here’s hoping this leads to stricter testing, so we don’t have as many post-fight surprise drug test failures.
