Tyron Woodley Wants Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre Following UFC 201 Victory
Tryon Woodley is the new UFC Welterweight champion following an incredible performance against Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 on Saturday night. Woodley knocked Lawler out in the first round in what is now the fastest finish of any UFC Welterweight title fight in history. But the new champ is already looking ahead to his next fight.
Stephen Thompson, who is currently on a seven-fight win streak, is likely to be Woodley’s first challenger. But Woodley wants UFC to book him for the biggest fight possible. And that means either legendary ex-champion Georges St-Pierre, or Nick Diaz, who is just coming off an 18-month suspension for marijuana metabolites.
“I think Nick Diaz comes off suspension in two days. I would love to fight him at UFC 202,” Woodley said. “I think he deserves it. He’s a guy who’s been around the sport for a long time, puts a lot of butts in the seats, sells a lot of pay-per-views. Or I would like to fight Georges St-Pierre in New York City [at UFC 205]. Stephen Thompson said he wanted to fight Robbie Lawler. He said it was a better matchup, fans would be excited to watch. He’ll get an opportunity for that fight.”
I think Thompson and Lawler fighting to determine the No. 1 contender to Woodley while Woodley fights Diaz or St-Pierre at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden would really help flesh out that card. I think both fights would be exciting, and lead to a better show overall, if Woodley’s performance at UFC 201 is anything to go by.
