‘The X Factor UK’ Winner Leona Lewis Joins ‘Cats’ Broadway Revival
One of the biggest winners in the history of The X Factor UK is heading to American shores as a Broadway star: Leona Lewis has been cast in the Broadway revival of Cats, which is scheduled to open in July.
Lewis will play the role of Grizabella in the Broadway show. Apparently, she secured the role after composer Andrew Lloyd Webber soured on Nicole Scherzinger, who played the same role in the London revival, for backing out of playing the role in the Broadway show. The irony in all this, of course, is that Scherzinger reportedly bailed on the Broadway show in favor of returning to The X Factor UK as a judge for the 2016 season.
Naturally, this could be a huge role for Lewis, since it won a Tony award for Betty Buckley, who not only originated the role, but also made the song “Memory” iconic (although I’m unabashedly partial to Jason Castro’s version from American Idol, because I’m about that life). While Lewis isn’t exactly a proven talent as an actress, I think this is the type of role that could launch her into the stratosphere. Here’s hoping this role works out for her. No lie, I love Leona Lewis (seriously, buy the I Am album. It’s great), and I can’t help but root for her to find success.
But what do you think of Leona Lewis joining the Broadway revival of Cats? Sound off in the comments!
