The X Factor UK 2016 Results: Who Went Home In Week 5? (VIDEO)

The X Factor UK 2016 results are live, as we discover who went home in Week 5 of the competition.

The theme this week was Girlband vs. Boyband, and it was actually kind of stunning how the night played out. Matt Terry had arguably his weakest performance so far with “I’m Your Man” by Wham, while Honey G took the Kriss Kross song “Jump” and delivered her best performance of the competition. Seriously, I feel like we’ve got a Reggie N Bollie situation on our hands, where she’s among the few exciting acts in an otherwise weak/boring field. Like Reggie N Bollie, I don’t think the finals are necessarily out of Honey G’s reach anymore, honestly (although I wouldn’t necessarily say she could win at this point. But you never know, which is why this show is among the more exciting talent competitions on TV). Meanwhile, Emily Middlemas and 5 After Midnight were among the highlights this week, with One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and The Spice Girls’s “Say You’ll Be There”, respectively. I have absolutely no idea who to predict for the Bottom Three this week, but if I had to guess, I would say Ryan Lawrie (for the FOURTH time!), Saara Aalto and Four of Diamonds. But I feel like we could be in for another shock if audiences were as iffy on Matt’s performance as Louis Walsh was. I’m writing all this live, so I guess we’ll see.

For newcomers, here’s how it works. The safe acts advancing to next week will be revealed by host Dermot O’Leary, leaving us with the Bottom 3. The public will then get to save one act from the Bottom 3 using the Lifeline Vote through The X Factor app. The remaining two acts will compete in the sing-off, and the judges will choose which act goes home. In the event of a deadlock, the act with the fewest votes leaves.

Prior to the results, Dermot informs us that only one percent separated the highest vote-getter from the second-highest vote-getter. There was also only one percent separating third place from second, and only four percentage points separating the Bottom 4. Interesting stuff.

The first act returning next week is…5 AFTER MIDNIGHT!

The second act returning next week is…RYAN LAWRIE! (BIG shock!)

The third act returning next week is…EMILY MIDDLEMAS!

The fourth act returning next week is…HONEY G! (Light booing from the audience on that one)

The fifth and final act guaranteed a spot in next week’s show is…MATT TERRY!

Genuinely shocked about Ryan making it through, but this was his best week of the live shows so far. And there is a great underdog story there with him, so I can see why he made it through, similarly to how Saara managed to avoid the Bottom Three these past two weeks despite being at risk the first two weeks.

With that said, I really, really want Saara to stick around, especially over Four of Diamonds. I like the girls, but I feel like they’ve pretty much plateaued, whereas Saara has a lot more to offer. I exclude Sam because I fully expect her to be saved by the Lifeline Vote. But hey, I got my predictions wrong the last two weeks, so who the hell even knows anymore?

Dermot brings Saara, Sam and Four of Diamonds back onto stage to reveal who viewers have saved with the Lifeline Vote. The result…

SAM LAVERY is saved by the Lifeline Vote!

SAARA AALTO and FOUR OF DIAMONDS will compete in the sing-off!

No surprises here, really.

-Four of Diamonds goes first with “When You Believe” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. It’s…okay. Again, I like these girls, but their performances are painfully generic for a girl group, particularly when the memory of groups like Little Mix and Fourth Impact aren’t even that distant.

-Saara Aalto is next with “Who You Are” by Jessie J, and I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Seriously, this may have been Saara’s best vocal overall. She shows such range and character here, with light and shade, as Mel B might put it.

Louis Walsh backs his own act and votes to send home SAARA AALTO!

Sharon Osbourne backs her own act and votes to send home FOUR OF DIAMONDS!

Nicole Scherzinger liked both performances but felt there was a clear winner in the sing-off, and votes to send home FOUR OF DIAMONDS!

Simon Cowell votes to send home the person who could still turn this around, adding that this person killed it by a mile in the sing-off. He votes to send home FOUR OF DIAMONDS!

FOUR OF DIAMONDS is eliminated from THE X FACTOR UK 2016!

The crowd is thrilled that Saara is safe, and so am I. It’ll be sad to see the girls go, but I think it was time. But their elimination here makes it even sadder that we somehow lost Gifty Louise last week. Of course, the silver lining for Four of Diamonds is that, as part of the top 8, they’re officially on The X Factor Arena Tour!

But what do you think of the results? Sound off in the comments!
