The X Factor UK 2016 Judges Confirmed: Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne, Nicole Scherzinger
After the underwhelming nature of The X Factor UK last season, a mix-up was badly needed. In this case, that meant going back to basics. The judges have officially been confirmed for The X Factor UK 2016, and it’s all returning judges, some of whom were there when The X Factor first started thirteen years ago.
Simon Cowell will be joined on the panel by returnees Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger. Simon hasn’t exactly slowed down following the birth of his son, Eric, as he’s done Britain’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent, and now The X Factor, in 2016 alone! But at least he’ll be in good company.
In talking about her return to The X Factor, Osbourne stated, “I’m overjoyed about going back to The X Factor, sitting with Lou, Lou, gorgeous Nicole and naughty Simon. But most of all, I can’t wait to meet baby Eric.”
Meanwhile, Scherzinger is just as stoked to come back. “I can’t wait to be back in the UK and on the show with the best judges sitting alongside me on the panel. I’m excited about discovering, mentoring and winning with an exciting new act this year. And having had winning contestants in the past, Simon knows I will do it.”
Walsh, for his part, thinks Simon simply asked him back because he missed him. “He’d say otherwise but I knew Simon missed me last year! I’m delighted to be back on the panel especially beside my two favourite female judges Sharon and Nicole, and I’m looking forward to taking them all back to Dublin this year when we head there for auditions.”
Lastly, Simon put out an ominous warning when talking about the new season: “Be careful what you wish for!”
Ultimately, while it’s probably not the most exciting judging panel around, I’m hyped for this season. In fact, I’m actually pretty happy to have Louis back. I know he makes a lot of weird choices, but part of what made last season fairly bland, to me, was the lack of any novelty acts. (And no, I don’t really count Reggie N Bollie as a novelty act either.) What sets The X Factor apart from other singing competitions is its capacity for valuing entertainment on a roughly equal pedestal as raw talent. Acts like Stevi Ritchie and Wagner have as much value as someone like Louisa Johnson, even if neither man has anywhere near as much talent. Basically, a lot of people absolutely hate the novelty acts, and I totally get why. But it’s just one of the things I’ve always loved about the UK version of the show, which remains my favorite reality singing competition on TV, bar none.
