The X Factor Australia 2015: Top 6 Perform For Judges’ Challenge Week (VIDEO)
The Top 6 took the stage on The X Factor Australia 2015, and it was the controversial Judges’ Challenge this week, as the contestants each had their songs chosen by one of the other judges on the panel. So the judges this week ended up feeling the same lack of control that the contestants do, as the song choices for their own acts were out of their hands, and into the hands of one of their rival mentors on the panel.
Naturally, this resulted in perhaps the most interesting live show of the season so far. Three of the performers delivered their absolute best performances of the season, with Natalie Conway taking to the skies on a wire harness for her showstopping version of “Toca’s Miracle” by Fragma, while Louise Adams brought down the house with her rendition of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me”. And then there was Jess & Matt, who delivered a truly spectacular X Factor moment with their rendition of Rihanna & Mikky Ekko’s “Stay”. Seriously, placing a partition between them was brilliant, and choosing to end the song mid-sentence was downright genius. This is without even getting into the strength of the vocal. It was a bit theatrical, sure, but it was a real storyteller’s performance. I just loved it so much, although I still don’t get why no singing competition allows acts to perform the full bridge of this song, as “the reason I hold on / Cuz I need this hole gone” and “funny you’re the broken one” etc. never get performed together. It’s just one or the other, which generally messes with the flow of the song. But that’s a small complaint when set against what Jess & Matt achieved here, in my opinion. This was a hell of a performance, joining Louise and Natalie as the highlights of the night.
Those three performances alone would have been enough to seal this as one of the best nights of the competition to date, but we also had Cyrus delivering a killer rendition of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, while Mahalie offered an understated but moving version of Adele’s “Chasing Pavements”. In fact, the only person who didn’t really have a great night was Big T, whose performance of “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars was a complete mess. Granted, it was a mess that Big T ultimately salvaged. Sure, he started off in the wrong key, and forgot a lyric or two, but as the performance went on, it actually became quite the number, especially towards the end, when Big T was hitting some killer notes and delivering more of his unique dance moves. So even on a performance that clearly frustrated him (as he looked visibly upset at the end of it), I still thought Big T delivered.

Thoughts: As far as Bottom 2 predictions go, I have absolutely no idea who lands there. I really do think it’s time for Big T to pop up there, but part of me expects him to get enough sympathy from viewers to keep him in. I’d love to be proven wrong, however, since the alternative is that it’ll be either Mahalia and Matt & Jess, or some combination of those two and a first-time Bottom 2 victim. I’m not sure who it’ll be, but I guess I’ll just throw out a guess and say it’ll be Mahalia and Big T. Or Jess & Matt and Big T. Sorry, I just can’t decide. The struggle is real.
