The X Factor Australia 2015 Results: Who Advanced to the Semifinals? (VIDEO)

The X Factor Australia 2015 is just two weeks away from the grand final, and that meant paring down the Top 5 to the final four.

Last night’s show was a technically solid but largely boring hour of performances. For whatever reason, this just didn’t feel like an X Factor quarterfinal show, and so I felt a certain amount of disappointment. It’s all the more surprising since this is a really strong crop of finalists. Of course, a lot of it has to do with the season-long issue of tired song choices, but I suppose it’s too late for us to get some new mentors in here, or to widen the list of cleared songs for the season. Either way, this week didn’t do much for me, and this week’s result wasn’t much better. In a repeat of last week, Mahalia Simpson went one-on-one with a first-time Bottom 2 victim in the sing-off. I love Mahalia to death, but could the judges really justify saving her a fourth time? Especially over someone like Big T, who’s only just now making his first appearance in the Bottom 2? Will it really be a repeat of last week, with Mahalia advancing to next week’s semifinal?

And so we got to DEADLOCK!

Host Luke Jacobz reads the result…

DANNII MINOGUE is the first judge knocked out of the competition!

Thoughts: I really don’t have much to say, honestly. Of course, I’m sad Mahalia is leaving, since she was one of my favorite acts the entire season. But I agree with James Blunt. This competition was putting a serious damper on her artistry. She peaked with her week one performance, and then Dannii’s song choices just kept letting her down, week after week. It’s kind of fitting that Dannii is the first judge out, since I feel like she never really knew what to do with this category, unfortunately. It felt like we never really got to see as much of the smoky, cool, jazzy Mahalia that we should have seen. And that’s a shame, because THAT Mahalia could be a star. But I don’t think I can say the same thing about the Mahalia who’d sing “The Climb” (and what a dreary sing-off. “The Climb” AND “I Believe I Can Fly”? Shoot me now). I wish Mahalia all the best, and I hope she can parlay her time on The X Factor Australia into a proper career, because she certainly deserves it. Beautiful, talented, endearingly awkward and quirky. I’m really going to miss her.
