Taylor Swift Reveals Her Mother Is Battling Cancer
Taylor Swift has reached out to her fans on social media. Unfortunately, this time, it’s to share some sad news about her mother, Andrea Finlay.
“I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you. Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now,” Taylor wrote in a statement on her Tumblr account.
“I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer,” she revealed.
Taylor goes on to explain that the diagnosis came after months of trying to get her mother to get checked out.
“For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine,” Taylor writes. “She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it.”
The tests revealed cancer, although Taylor is keeping the nature of her mother’s cancer private, at the moment.
“I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know,” Taylor wrote, adding that she hopes this will encourage others to get checked out. Taylor’s mother is only 57-years-old, and felt fine before going in to get seen, so this could clearly happen to anyone. Both Taylor and her mother are hoping that this will serve as a teaching moment for people who haven’t seen a doctor in recent years.
“She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle… Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight,” Taylor continued.
Finally, Taylor added, “Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this. Love you. Taylor.”
Of course, it didn’t take long for news of Taylor’s mother to take over Twitter, as #PrayForMamaSwift is the top trending topic as of press time. So her fans care quite a bit, not just about Taylor but about the well-being of the woman who gave her to us. It’s pretty touching, actually, especially considering how much we know Taylor loves her mom (“The Best Day” is still one of her most emotional songs, and certainly her most emotional music video). My thoughts are with Taylor and her mother, and we wish Andrea Finlay the best in her treatment and recovery.
