‘Star Wars’ Episode VIII Has a Release Date, Along With Spinoff Movie ‘Rogue One’
Disney’s annual shareholders meeting today in San Francisco was significant for reasons other than the announcement Frozen 2. We finally got confirmation on when the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy will release, along with news on the first of the Star Wars spinoff films.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters on May 26, 2017, which has me downright giddy, since the December 18th release date for The Force Awakens is a major departure from the usual May release dates of the past (seriously, it’s going to be weird seeing a Star Wars movie when it’s cold outside).
Rian Johnson, the man behind the fantastic Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie Brick, will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Meanwhile, the first of the spinoff films not only has a release date, but a title as well: Rogue One be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards, and will star Oscar nominee Felicity Jones. The movie will hit theaters on December 16, 2016. While no plot details have been revealed, the title suggests it’s a story centered on the Rebel Alliance, which would more or less line up with the rumors centered around the film. Rogue One starts filming in London this summer, from a script by Cinderella writer Chris Weitz and based on an idea by Oscar-winning VFX supervisor John Knoll.
Star Wars is pretty much my favorite film franchise, so I’m hoping the people in charge here handle it with greater care than George Lucas seemed to. That said, the amount of talent on hand here gives me confidence in where this is all headed.
