Spider-Man Confirmed for ‘Captain America: Civil War’
It’s official! Spider-Man has been confirmed for Captain America: Civil War!
The news comes just one day after the confirmation that English actor Tom Holland would succeed Andrew Garfield as the next person to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man on the big screen. Holland’s first solo movie as Spider-Man won’t hit theaters until July 28, 2017, but speculation was rampant — even before Holland’s casting — that Spider-Man would appear in next summer’s Captain America: Civil War in a cameo role. This will mark Holland’s first on-screen appearance as the webslinger, and although it might be jarring to first meet Holland’s Spidey in a big superhero mash-up, I think it’s actually far better to meet him in media res, so to speak, rather than getting another tired origin story first. Besides, it makes all the sense in the world for one of the cornerstones of the Marvel Comics to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in an event movie of this magnitude, since…well, why wouldn’t Spider-Man get involved?
The plot of the movie centers on how a tragedy caused by superpowered individuals leads to the government implementing the Superhero Registration Act. The divisive piece of legislation splits the characters of the MCU straight down the middle, with Iron Man (who’s for the act) and the other half siding with Captain America (who is against it). Without getting too deep into spoiler territory, Spider-Man played a big role in the Civil War storyline in the comic books, so this should offer us our first real look into how Holland’s Spider-Man will come across on the big screen, even though Holland’s role is only just a cameo. Either way, Marvel has faith in him, and so do I.
This is awesome news, and has me even more amped for Captain America: Civil War. Hell, I’m more psyched for this than I was for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Sure, this movie has the potential to be even MORE crowded than Age of Ultron (which I loved, by the way) but this is a MCU-spanning epic that should make for one of the biggest Marvel movies in history. I can’t wait!
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
