Sorry, Guys, ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Isn’t Happening
The internet was abuzz when rumors dropped that Disney was planning a third movie in The Princess Diaries franchise. But a source close to Disney has now addressed the rumors. And, unfortunately for fans of the series, it’s not good news.
A source for Entertainment Weekly confirmed that the company has no plans for a sequel or a reboot, although this news doesn’t preclude Disney possibly pursuing one in the future. But right now? No such luck.
The news originally hit on Tuesday, when Tracking Board reported that The Princess Diaries 3 would feature original producer Debra Chase returning to the series. Speculation stated that the film might actually be a reboot if they could not get Anne Hathaway back. Of course, the Meg Cabot book series upon which the films are based, all focus on Hathaway’s character, Princess Mia. So it’d be a different series altogether if the franchise were rebooted, particularly since Cabot is still writing books about Mia today.
Still, it might not be the worst idea in the world to reboot this for a new audience, considering the original film, directed by Garry Marshall, was a huge surprise hit for Disney, grossing $108 million in North America and launching Anne Hathaway as a leading star. So maybe we’ll get a sequel/reboot at some point in the future, but it’s not in the cards at the moment. But the positive reaction online to the possibility of another movie in The Princess Diaries franchise could show to Disney that they might have something here worth pursuing.
But what do you think? Should The Princess Diaries get a reboot/sequel? Or were two movies enough? Sound off in the comments!
