So ‘District 9’ Director Neill Blomkamp is Directing a New ‘Alien’ Movie After All
The news comes after Blomkamp posted Alien concept art images to his Instagram account. The picture depicts a Xenomorph, the alien from Ridley Scott’s iconic franchise. The caption for the picture reads: “Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien”.
Initially, I was worried that the rumors would signal an attachment to Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus sequel, since…well, that movie wasn’t particularly good, despite having the incomparable Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and a bunch of other talented people that should have resulted in a better movie than the one we got. But this new Alien film is, thankfully, a separate project from the Prometheus sequel, although the untitled film will still be produced by Ridley Scott and take place after Prometheus 2. So while the films will apparently have a far different style (with Scott’s sleek approach to the Prometheus filming contrasting significantly with Blomkamp’s grittier, more lived-in approach to science fiction), they will share a continuity of sorts. I’m excited for this, even if I had my doubts about a new Alien franchise following the Prometheus mess. Blomkamp just inspires that sort of faith, for me. District 9 was terrific, and while Elysium wasn’t the epic I was expecting, it was still a damn good film. This is, ultimately, some good news for science fiction fans, I think.
But what do you think? Is Blomkamp the right choice? Or would another director have suited the franchise better? Sound off in the comments!
