Snapchat CEO might buy Taylor Swift label Big Machine
Is Snapchat boss Evan Spiegel going to buy Big Machine? The social network CEO was spotted during the annual Clive Davis party during Grammy Awards weekend talking with Apple music head Eddy Cue. A source to the NY Post suggests that Spiegel is interested in acquiring the label housing Taylor Swift and might be enlisting the help of Apple. The price tag is a rumored $350 million.
Big Machine is owned by Scott Borchetta, this year’s American Idol mentor. Taylor Swift has one or two albums left to do with the label contractually, so I can see why Borchetta might want to unload the label now while Taylor Swift is at her peak.
In the leaked Sony e-mails a couple of months ago, Spiegel was reported to have been interested in acquiring a label. He wrote that he “would like to have a record label so he could focus on the artists that he wants to use [Snapchat] to promote.”
Snapchat has already unveiled its new Discover feature which promotes brands like PEOPLE, ESPN and Warner Music, so a deal like this would make sense. For complete control obviously… imagine a day when a Taylor Swift album debuts and plays entirely in Snapchat.
Back in 2013 there were rumors that Evan Spiegel and Taylor Swift were dating.
