Simon Cowell Fails To Win Race For Christmas No. 1 With Any Syco Label Act
Simon Cowell was more hopeful than most music moguls in the UK this year, as he had no less than four separate Syco Music acts in the running for the coveted UK Christmas No. 1 (five, if you count James Arthur, who left Columbia to re-sign with Cowell back in September). But it’s looking like Clean Bandit is keeping Simon from sitting atop the peak once again.
With seven weeks at the top already, Clean Bandit kept the streak alive with their mega hit “Rockabye”, which claimed the Christmas No. 1. The track managed to prevent Syco’s Louis Tomlinson from grabbing the top spot with “Just Hold On”, as the former One Direction singer fell to No. 3. Meanwhile, fellow Syco Music act Little Mix landed at No. 4 with “Touch” (they also held down the #11 spot with “Shout Out To My Ex”).
As for The X Factor winner Matt Terry, he looked like he was in a prime spot to make a run at the Christmas No. 1 when he debuted at No. 3 last week with the Ed Sheeran-penned winner’s single, “When Christmas Comes Around”. However, he was unable to carry the finale momentum into Christmas week, as Matt dropped down to No. 8. Still, he at least managed to finish ahead of Syco labelmate James Arthur, whose “Say You Won’t Let Go” enters its fifteenth week on the charts, coming in at No. 9. Meanwhile, last year’s X Factor winner, Louisa Johnson, remains in the Top 25 with her track, “So Good”, which lands at No. 25.
Ultimately, while Simon Cowell couldn’t push any of his acts to the No. 1 spot this Christmas, the fact that so many of his acts are charting this high is a good sign for his label, and for his standing in the music industry.
