Shannon Beiste, Glee’s First Transgender Character Revealed (PHOTOS)
Shannon Beiste, played by Dot-Marie Jones, is getting a transformation on Glee this season. Here’s a first look at Glee’s first transgender character.
When the transgender storyline was revealed on Glee, Dot-Marie said of the outpouring of support from fans:
“I had thousands of Tweets from people. I was crying. Members of the transgender community were saying, ‘I never thought I’d see myself on TV. You have no idea what this means to me. Now, maybe people will get it.'”
In 2011, Chaz Bono who transitioned from female to male in 2008, competed on Dancing with the Stars and released a documentary of his transition which was aired on OWN. Also in 2008, Thomas Beatie got pregnant and was known as the “pregnant man.” He got pregnant again in 2011. The documentary “Pregnant Man” was aired on Discovery Channel in 2008. (Sadly he has since filed for divorce). I guess some members of the transgender community missed those events if this is the first time they are seeing themselves on TV! Really, there’s a long list: Chelsea Manning, Lana Wachowski, Laverne Cox… I’m not hating, just alarmed that Glee is the barometer for acceptance for some people. Really?
Anyway, the pics!
