Serena Williams wins 19th Grand Slam singles title at Australian Open 2015
Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at the Australian Open 2015 women’s final in Melbourne. This was her sixth Australian Open title and her 19th Grand Slam singles title overall. She now only trails Open Era leader Steffi Graf by 3 titles. She also passed both Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in number of titles outright.
During the awards presentation, Serena said:
“Growing up I wasn’t the richest, but I had a rich family in spirit and support. Standing here with 19 championships is something I never thought would happen. I went on court with a ball, a racquet and hope, that’s all I had. And it’s an inspiration for you guys who want to be the best – you can be, never give up and you don’t know who you can inspire. I’m so honored to be here standing with my 19th title – I’m just so excited.”
Serena won the US Open just last year and this could be another big year for her if she can fend off injury.
