Second Member of X Factor Boy Band Comes Out About Sexuality (VIDEO)
George Shelley of The X Factor UK’s Union J has come out with a YouTube video saying that he’s “dated men in the past” and “doesn’t want to be scared anymore.”
The “golden rule” about boy bands is that there is always one member that’s gay (closeted or otherwise) and Union J has bucked the trend by having multiple members who are not straight.
Shelley joins fellow bandmate Jaymi Hensley who came out in 2012, though he said that he didn’t want to call himself bisexual because he thinks labels are outdated.
He said in part:
“I’ve been reading a lot of speculation online as to whether I’m straight or gay or bi, and it’s all these labels and it’s a little bit old fashioned. This is why I’m not going to label it myself, because it’s not something I feel I can label.
I’ve had girlfriends that I’ve loved…but I’ve also had boyfriends. I just want you to know that whether I decide to be with a girl next or be with a guy next, it’s because I love them, and it shouldn’t be a big deal.”
I am so proud of George Shelley. I love Union J!
