Sam Smith to Pay Tom Petty Royalties for ‘Stay With Me’ After a Copyright Dispute

Thanks to a recent copyright dispute, Tom Petty will be paid royalties by Sam Smith earned on his Grammy-nominated hit song “Stay With Me.”

Specifically because the single was found to be very similar to the Tom Petty song “I Won’t Back Down” co-written with ELO’s Jeff Lynne.

A rep for Smith revealed in a statement that the song is now co-credited to both Petty and Lynne.

They would go on to add that while there are “similarities” found in the melodies of  the songs, they were a “complete coincidence.”

“Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement.”
