This year’s inductees, as usual, were selected by over 900 voters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, along with a popular vote selected by a fan ballot. The rules are that the top five artists from the fan vote are tallied alongside the other ballots to determine the 2017 Inductees, with four of the five fan ballot winners being inducted. Unfortunately, that means that one of the fan ballot acts would miss out on induction, in a cruel twist of the knife. In this instance, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam and Yes won the fan ballot, along with The Cars, who were the unfortunate fifth act missing out on induction.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2017 Induction Ceremony will take place on April 7th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The program will later air on HBO, although a specific air date has yet to be announced.

Ultimately, I think a lot of these inductions are long overdue, particularly ELO and Journey. Of course, I’ll be shocked if there isn’t at least some online controversy about Tupac going into the Hall of Fame from the contingent that doesn’t realize “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” no longer means “just Rock and Roll music”, and hasn’t for years. It’s more of a Popular Music Hall of Fame, which means this is about as good of a lineup as you can get. If nothing else, it should be an interesting ceremony, between the performances and the induction speeches themselves.
