Ricky Martin Pulls Charity Event From Donald Trump Golf Club
Ricky Martin may not be a Mexican immigrant himself, but he’s showing solidarity with his fellow Latinos nonetheless. Because, really, it doesn’t require any particular race, color or creed to agree that Donald Trump is kind of an a-hole.
So here’s the quick-and-dirty on Martin’s decision: The Puerto Rican singer had planned to hold his annual Ricky Martin Foundation charity golf tournament at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. However, Martin is pulling his charity event from the Trump-owned venue after the 2016 presidential hopeful made comments claiming that some Mexican immigrants are “bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” Trump said during his presidential announcement speech earlier this month. “They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
In response, NBC has cut all ties with Trump, Univision has dumped his pageants, and even Macy’s has bailed on their partnership with the entrepreneur, all while Trump threatens to sue seemingly everyone who has a beef with him. So I wouldn’t exactly be surprised if he goes after Ricky Martin for this.
Regardless, Martin is standing by his decision, releasing a statement through spokesperson Helga García:
“The decision corresponds to the commitment of solidarity from our founding president to human rights and the Latino community.”
As a Puerto Rican myself, I couldn’t be prouder at Ricky Martin’s show of solidarity. I hope more celebrities and organizations follow suit by breaking ties with Trump, who is basically toxic at this point.
