‘Revenge’ To End After Season 4
After four seasons, Revenge has officially been canceled. The current fourth season will be its last. The upcoming finale will serve as the end of the series.
“We can officially tell our fans that this will be the end of the story,” executive producer Sunil Nayar revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We’ve been talking to the network and we all just wanted to make sure that we felt very confident. Now that everybody has seen the finale—which is fabulous—everybody understands that as much as we all adore the show, it has hit exactly the mark it needed to to end. This is the series finale of Revenge that will be airing in a couple weeks.”
It seems like a natural place to end the show, considering Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) is a goner, having committed suicide in order to frame Emily (Emily VanCamp) in a last ditch attempt at revenge. With Emily in prison for her murder, it seems the show is nearing its close. And that end could have grim tidings for Emily. The finale, airing on Sunday, May 10, will be titled “Two Graves,” after the Confucius quote that opened the series (“Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves”).
“We certainly had a pitch of how the show could go on, but this is why I feel so grateful to the studio and the network because they also erred on the side of creativity,” Nayar says. “The show is still popular, it’s loved worldwide. I can see why all the arguments from even an economic standpoint to maybe keep it going, but at the end of the day—kind of like they had with Lost—they support creativity above all. They really got the sense with us as their partners that we all came up with a great way to end these stories.”
Nayar claims that the finale will give fans closure, but notes that “a tiny little cliffhanger” remains in the final episode.
“There are epic emotional moments in the finale,” Nayar adds. “There are really shocking things that happen in the finale. It’s a tricky thing because the fans are such passionate lovers of the show and we really want to give them what they want, but the hard part about a finale in a show like this is you want to give them some of what they want, some of what they don’t know they want yet and some of what they never expected, and it needs to be a perfect mix of all those things. I truly believe our finale is the perfect mix of all those three things. I think they’re going to be extremely satisfied.”
I think it’s the right time for the show to end. I’ve had a really hard time getting into this season, to such a degree that I think the show would have been better off ending last year. Revenge has had to do a lot of narrative stretching to keep the stories going as long as they have, and it’s resulted in some hare-brained developments that feel gimmicky and inorganic. If this really is the end, I hope Revenge finishes strong, because it has been one of my favorite shows for four straight seasons, and I think it deserves an epic finale.
But what do you think? Is this the right time for Revenge to end? Sound off in the comments!
