Reality Check: Who Deserves To Win American Idol 2016? (VIDEO)
TVLine.com‘s resident reality TV expert Michael Slezak is back with American Idol 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle for the latest episode of Reality Check, as the duo gives their thoughts on the farewell season of American Idol and Season 10 of The Voice!
This week, Michael and Melinda skip over The Voice to focus over twenty minutes on this week’s American Idol Top 5 performance show. Their discussion features what could possibly be the biggest disagreement the hosts have ever had, as Melinda is frustrated over Michael giving La’Porsha Renae’s stellar performance of “No More Drama” a B+ grade. Should it have been an A? Or was Michael correct in his assessment that her earlier version of India.Arie’s “Ready For Love” was the superior performance of the night? Also, who deserves to win American Idol 2016? It’s a weighted question, but one that demands to be asked, as we near the end of the competition. Another important question is who deserves to go home next. This time, at least, Michael and Melinda are in agreement over who should be in the Bottom 2, and who will be. It’s twenty minutes of terrific American Idol analysis, and definitely worth watching, if you’re looking for an extra Idol fix to tide you over until Thursday. Watch the videos below:
The argument for La’Porsha deserving to win is certainly the easiest to make, considering the consistency of her performances. But I agree that it’s not necessarily set in stone that she will. Right now, the only person whom I feel confident won’t win is Sonika, as I could see Trent still having a chance, along with MacKenzie and Dalton, both of whom I feel have a good shot at stopping La’Porsha’s march towards victory. This isn’t necessarily because they’re better singers, but because we’ve seen the kind of damage a cute guy with a guitar can do on this show. And, as Michael notes, there’s power in the “improvement arc”. Dalton had a big week, in my opinion, delivering one of his best performances of the season with “The Sound of Silence”. Meanwhile, MacKenzie did the same with “Billie Jean,” serving up a performance that just screams “Finale reprisal”. Hell, Trent had a finale-worthy performance as well with “Simple Man”. I know I’m a bit of a broken record on this, but I really feel like the competition is still wide open. Sure, La’Porsha might be out in front right now, but it’s hard to know how this week will change the trajectory of the race.
As for who will be in the Bottom 2, and who should be, I agree that Sonika is the likeliest to find herself going home, although I’m not sure who deserves to join her. Granted, part of it is that I like everyone left, and can’t imagine who would land in the Bottom 2 out of the other four. You could argue that Dalton has been coasting for weeks, but that “Counting Stars” performance by Trent was some kind of awful. I feel reasonably certain it will be either Dalton or Trent, and if I had to guess, I’d say Trent. Of course, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t some measure of guesswork involved, since this season has been pretty tough on my prediction scores. I mean, I still have no idea how we lost Olivia Rox so early.
