‘Reality Check’: Kelly Clarkson and The All-Time Great American Idol Moment (VIDEO)
TVLine.com‘s resident reality TV expert Michael Slezak is back with American Idol 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle for the latest episode of Reality Check, as the duo gives their thoughts on the farewell season of American Idol!
Today is a TWO-PART episode of Reality Check, as Michael and Melinda make up for last week’s missed episode, and offer their thoughts on the Top 14 before tackling the Season 15 Top 10 show. But the major headline out of all of this is Kelly Clarkson, who delivered perhaps THE great American Idol moment of all-time with her absolutely soul-washing rendition of “Piece By Piece” on last week’s live show. Michael and Melinda explore why the moment was so deeply affecting, and why Kelly Clarkson is THE American Idol. It’s one of the more passionate discussions I’ve seen from Michael and Melinda, and it’s possibly the most I’ve ever found myself nodding my head in agreement. Of course, this isn’t to undersell their thoughts on the Top 10, as they have a lot to say. In fact, I was surprised to hear Michael state that there are SEVEN people in the Top 10 who could presumably win! Mostly because he picked the exact same seven people I did! Great minds, maybe? Or maybe just coincidence? Either way, I’ll take it. In addition to their favorites for the past two weeks, we find out which three contestants are likely on their way towards elimination. We also get some critiques of the questionable song choices many contestants are picking this season, and the completely absent theme weeks so far. It’s an entertaining, insightful double episode that’s well worth checking out. Watch the video below:
I suggested in the live blog last week that Gianna Isabella’s “Listen” felt like a song choice decided by her mother, and I’m glad to see Michael and Melinda saw it too, if only because I think those types of song choices are really going to hurt Gianna, moving forward. Two singers go home tomorrow night, and if she’s lucky enough not to be one of them, I think it’ll really help Gianna to avoid skewing too old with her song choices. She already went old fashioned with “I Put a Spell On You”, and then she went too big with “Listen”. Something light and fun would really help give new life to her in the competition, I think. Something like what Jena Irene did with “Clarity” back in Season 13. Gianna certainly has a lot of talent, but — much like Tristan McIntosh — I wonder if she’s too young to really know how to channel it just yet. Then again, considering this is the final season, it’s not as if they can just come back next year, so I’m not surprised both girls are going all out to try and make their mark. But there’s a middle ground between belting your heart out and going subtle with a pop-country song. I hope they find that middle ground, if they’re given a second chance by America.
I’m also 100% on-board with the notion that Sonika, La’Porsha, Trent, Dalton, Mackenzie, Olivia and Avalon could presumably win this thing. Granted, it seems like a bit of a stretch for some, coming off of the Top 10 show (namely Avalon and Trent), but I think anyone can change their trajectory in the competition. After all, people like Kris Allen and Nick Fradiani went from dark horses to eventual winners. So it should be interesting to see who steps up in the coming weeks, and who falls by the wayside. I already love this Top 10. We’ve got crazy variety here, and it should make for a really fun season, provided these contestants are willing to push themselves beyond their respective comfort zones.
