‘Reality Check’: Did the Judges Just Eliminate the American Idol 2016 Winner? (VIDEO)
TVLine.com‘s resident reality TV expert Michael Slezak is back with American Idol 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle for the latest episode of Reality Check, as the duo gives their thoughts on the farewell season of American Idol!
As we head into the first week of the Top 24 rounds, Michael and Melinda explore some of the iffy choices the judges made in the closing night of Hollywood Week. In particular, Michael and Melinda argue that the judges may have eliminated the girl who would have WON Season 15 if they’d put her through to the Top 24. In addition, we find out what decision, if it comes to pass, will cause Michael to storm the FOX offices in rage! It’s a fantastic, supersized episode this week, as these two do it podcast style with a Google Hangout, due to their editor being out of town for the week. The episode is a full half hour of great American Idol discussion, and in-depth analysis of what went right, what went wrong, and what might happen in the weeks to come. I love the usual Reality Check format, but I wouldn’t mind this format more often. Watch the video below:
The assessment on the elimination of Jessica Cabral was right on the money. Of all the cuts on Hollywood Week, I found Jessica’s to be the most baffling, even more so than John Wayne Schulz (who, while not vocally spectacular, seemed like a sure bet to advance simply based on his down-home star quality). I don’t know that Jessica necessarily would have won the show, or that she even would have gone far with these voters, but I think she deserved that chance in the Top 24. If nothing else, she deserved it far more than some of the other singers who went through, some of whom just aren’t that ready (Jeneve Rose Mitchell seems like an absolutely darling girl, and she’s got loads of talent. But I just don’t feel she’s all there yet. Then again, this IS the final season, so I can understand why she was put through anyway. But even in that case, I think Jessica deserved a spot more than Gianna Isabella and Thomas Stringfellow).
I also agree with Melinda’s issue with Lee Jean shushing the audience during his performance. I’m still kind of stunned that happened, since that’s the sort of thing that could really cost a guy with voters. Of course, since the judges are picking eight of the Top 10, with the voters picking two wildcards, I don’t think it’ll make that much a difference. By the time America gets to vote, Lee Jean’s shushing will likely be old news. He’ll either get through on his merits or he won’t. I suppose we’ll see.
But what do you think of this week’s show? Do you agree or disagree with Michael and Melinda’s opinions? Sound off in the comments!
