Rafael Dos Anjos Injured, Out of UFC 196: Conor McGregor Needs New Opponent
One of the most anticipated fights of the year is now off the cards: UFC Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos is out of UFC 196, which now means UFC Featherweight champion Conor McGregor will need a new opponent.
According to reports, dos Anjos suffered a broken foot in training last week, which means UFC now needs to find a replacement on just two weeks notice against the biggest star in all of mixed martial arts. Of course, having opponents pull out on fights isn’t exactly new to McGregor, since Jose Aldo had to pull out of his fight last July (the fight did eventually end up happening at UFC 194 in December, with McGregor knocking Aldo unconscious just seconds into the fight).
With that said, this is still the biggest fight UFC has lost due to injury in the past year, even bigger than the UFC championship fight between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velazquez. It’s unknown who McGregor will fight now, as UFC is likely in total panic mode, since their big show doesn’t have a main event. It’s looking ike the UFC Bantamweight title fight between Holly Holm and Meisha Tate, in what will be Holm’s first defense since knocking out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 in November, will be bumped up to the main event slot.
Which fighter should get the fight against McGregor? Should he fight at all or is it too short notice for McGregor’s opponent? Sound off in the comments!
