Portlandia Renewed for Seasons 6 and 7
One of TV’s most irreverent comedies is returning for at least two more seasons, as IFC has renewed Portlandia for Seasons 6 and 7.
This is similar to the show’s 2013 renewal, as IFC renewed it for two seasons at once. Presumably, the network will make its next renewal decision during Season 7, meaning series creators/stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein can probably relax for the next two years, at least where renewal worries are concerned.
Each new season of Portlandia will feature 10 episodes, running a half-hour each.
Armisen and Brownstein will remain as executive producers along with co-creator/director Jonathan Krisel.
“Portland may be a place where young people go to retire, but IFC is not retiring Portlandia,” said IFC president Jennifer Caserta. “And if you order a book from Toni and Candace at the Feminist Bookstore right now, it might even arrive by the time season seven rolls around.”
Portlandia is one of TV’s most underrated comedies, so I think this is fantastic news all-around. Armisen is a tremendous talent, and Brownstein is a versatile performer in her own right. If nothing else, this should further strengthen IFC’s brand as a place where quirky comedies are allowed to be quirky. It’s like watching an indie comedy film every week. And honestly, I have no problem with that whatsoever. So kudos to Armisen, Brownstein, Krisel and everyone involved in the making of the show. This renewal is well-earned.
