Noomi Rapace Cast as Lead in Amy Winehouse Biopic
The original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is going to play one of the most iconic voices of the last twenty years.
Noomi Rapace has been cast as Amy Winehouse in an upcoming biopic on the singer’s life, from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan. The biopic, titled simply Amy Winehouse, comes less than five years after Winehouse passed away from alcohol poisoning at age 27.
Not a whole lot is known about the movie right now beyond Rapace and Sheridan’s involvement, and the current talks with Winehouse’s father/estate manager, Mitch Winehouse, for the rights to her music. Hopefully, they’ll be able to secure the rights and avoid another situation like the Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is by My Side, which didn’t get the rights to Hendrix’s music, making for a biopic that had to avoid depicting Hendrix’s most famous years. Granted, Jimi: All Is by My Side was a decent movie, so it’s not impossible to make a good film without Amy’s best-known hits, especially if you focus on her early career. But I’m not sure that’s the sort of Amy Winehouse movie people want to see.
