Nintendo Responds to Christina Grimmie ‘Zelda’ Fan Petition
Following the tragic death of Christina Grimmie, fans petitioned Nintendo to put the singer/lifelong Zelda fan into the next Legend of Zelda game as a non-playable character. After nearly two weeks, but Nintendo has finally responded to the petition, which has earned almost 60,000 signatures.
“We are aware of the outpouring of support for her, as well as the petition, but we won’t be making any creative or content decisions in this time of mourning,” Nintendo said in an official statement.
So yeah, this pretty much sounds like “no”, albeit a very nice “no”. Granted, I do understand why Nintendo is (apparently) turning down the request, since this would set a precedent for filling up their games with tributes, left and right. That said, from a personal level, I would have loved to have seen Christina in a Zelda game. It would have been so beautiful and perfect, particularly since she was such a bright, whimsical, lovely young woman, as if she’d been a Zelda character brought to life herself. It’s still hard to believe she’s gone. While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks like the best Zelda game yet, playing it is going to be a bittersweet knowing that Christina never got the chance to enjoy it. I hope Heaven gets a copy at some point.
