Nick Grimshaw Joins ‘The X Factor UK’ as New Judge, Mel B and Louis Walsh Gone
Just moments after the announcement that Rita Ora would be joining Season 12 of The X Factor UK comes confirmation of a long-time rumor: radio personality Nick Grimshaw has now officially joined the judging panel as well.
The news was confirmed when Ora posted a picture on Twitter of herself with Grimshaw and judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini on Twitter, with the caption: “Let’s do this”

An official tweet from The X Factor UK account quickly followed, cementing the new judging panel.
Naturally, this means farewell for Mel B, who coached Italian crooner Andrea Faustini all the way to the finals, and Louis Walsh, who finally departs from The X Factor after being with the show since its inception in 2004. Neither was really expected to return to the series, but if the deals with Grimshaw and Ora had fallen through, it wouldn’t have been all that unexpected to find they’d been suddenly rehired. Lord knows, it wouldn’t be the first time Simon Cowell brought Louis back after vowing he was finished, as the same thing happened in 2007.
In the aftermath, the stars have been commenting on the news. Grimshaw stated: “I love X Factor and have watched the series religiously since it started, so obviously I’m hugely excited to be joining the show.
“Music is my job and my passion and I’m really looking forward to seeing what talent we can find and nurture this year. I can’t wait for judges’ houses in Oldham!”
Cowell added: “The best-kept secret in TV is out!! But I am really happy with the new judging line-up for X Factor this year. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
He would go on to add that he “met a lot of people” during the search for new judges. “We have always had great judges. And I will always be thankful for their passion and expertise,” he said. “I have no idea what the show will look like but I feel both excited and nervous. It’s going to be very different! Embrace the madness…”
Ora and Grimshaw are pretty close, so there’s an expectation that their chemistry should rub off on the show and provide a panel with real chemistry. If nothing else, the show needs it, considering ratings are at an all-time low for the show.
All in all, I have no idea how this panel is going to work, or even what Grimshaw’s qualifications are, but like I said in the post about Rita, The X Factor UK remains my favorite talent show on television, so I’m anxious to see how this season comes together regardless.
