Netflix Renews ‘Orange Is the New Black’ for Three More Seasons
Orange Is the New Black isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Netflix has announced that the prison drama (or is it classified as a comedy?) has been renewed for three more seasons, meaning OITNB will be around until at least 2019.
The official press release features comments from creator/showrunner Jenji Kohan:
“Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, ‘May you lead an interesting life,’ is a curse, but I don’t live in those cultures,” Kohan said, before going on to thank her cast and crew. “And kudos and gratitude to the stellar cast and crew and writers and producers and editors and musicians and mixers and shleppers… with whom I have the pride and honor of crafting this show. Three more years! Three more years!”
Of course, it’s up to you whether or not three more years of Orange Is the New Black is a good thing. There’s an argument to be made that the show should be working up to its endpoint, rather than continuing on indefinitely like Netflix seems to want. Others online have argued there’s been a decline in quality in the past year, and that the characters have begun to stagnate. That said, the end to Season 3 indicates that we’re likely to get a boatload of new characters for Season 4, which is currently in production. So it should give the show a real shot in the arm to get a bunch of new blood into its ranks. At the very least, it’s good to see a bunch of talented people continue to get work. Congratulations to the cast and crew on the renewal.
