Netflix Buys Rights to ‘The Office’ Spinoff Movie With Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais already has a working relationship with Netflix following his Emmy-nominated comedy series Derek. And now, Gervais is extending that relationship by selling Netflix the worldwide rights to a spinoff movie based on the original BBC mockumentary, The Office. The series has been spunoff in America, France, Germany and Israel, just to name a few places, will
Gervais revealed on the Opie With Jim Norton Show on SiriusXM that the spinoff would be titled David Brent: Life on the Road. The movie, which will feature Gervais as writer, director and star, will focus on the original documentary crew catching up with Gervais’s character, David Brent, as he pursues rock superstardom with his band.
“This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I’m going to say it now. Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again,” Gervais said. “Which is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas, do you know what I mean? Because I want to do tours off the back of it. So for me, it’s great.”
The movie will release in the U.K. on Aug. 19, although there is no word on when the movie will release in the United States. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if we received a concurrent release, or a release shortly after the initial launch date. The original version of The Office was among the best comedies of its generation, and it’s resulted in America getting a similarly terrific and memorable series. So I’m all for giving this film a look whenever it hits Netflix.
