Netflix Adds ‘Daredevil’ Star, Three Others to Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’

Marvel’s Luke Cage series is coming sooner than we might expect, and that means getting a cast to join up with lead star Mike Colter. Luckily, Marvel has made their latest official casting announcements…

Daredevil star Rosario Dawson will reprise her role as Claire Temple for the action drama, as the character’s friendship with Luke Cage will form the basis of one of the show’s major arcs. This will basically make Luke the second Marvel hero in a row that Claire ends up getting close to, which suggests she’s certainly got a type. But hey, who can blame her, right?

“We are thrilled to have Rosario in another one of our television series,” said Executive Producer/Marvel Head of TV Jeph Loeb. “Her performance as Claire Temple in Marvel’s Daredevil was astonishing and we can’t wait to see her shine in Marvel’s Luke Cage.”

Three other stars were added to the cast in major roles from the comic books, and the choices have led to a diverse array of talent.

Ray Donovan star Simone Missick will play the popular Misty Knight, an NYPD police detective who has a singular focus on getting the dirt on Luke Cage. It sounds a lot like your typical “cop who’s this close to figuring it all out” character, but I think there’s more to the role than that, and I’m anxious to see how Missick handles it.

“We know fans have waited years to see Misty Knight brought to life, so we had to find the right actress,” said Loeb. “Simone blew us away with her performance as the strong-willed cop on a mission.”

Missick will have a fellow Ray Donovan alum with her on the cast, as Frank Whaley will star as Misty’s partner, Rafael Scarfe. It’s a role that could be an ensemble darkhorse, much like Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson on Daredevil.

“Frank Whaley has a wiry intensity that he’s imbued in Det. Rafael Scarfe,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. “He’s a great counterpart to Misty, and a wonderful actor.”

Lastly, Sons of Anarchy alum Theo Rossi is also joining the cast as the vicious criminal, Shades. His imposing physical stature and striking look should lend an air of danger to his performance, so this is pretty great casting.

“Theo Rossi is a swiss army knife–no matter what you bring to him, he has a tool for it–and he’s playfully unpredictable,” said Coker. “His Shades will be someone you hate to love.”

Ultimately, this is a pretty strong cast overall, and I love how Netflix’s Marvel TV Universe is already starting to fit together, especially considering Luke Cage is already connected to Jessica Jones, which premieres in November. Luke Cage doesn’t hit Netflix until 2016, but I’m already stoked.
