NBCUniversal Renews ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ Through 2020
Fans of Ellen DeGeneres have cause for celebration!
The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been renewed by 10 NBC-owned stations through 2020. The series is currently the top-rated talk show on daytime television, and it’s earned numerous plaudits over its decade-long run so far, including a nomination this morning from the Art Directors Guild.
“For more than a decade, ‘Ellen’ has anchored the daytime lineups of the NBC-owned stations, offering our viewers a great afternoon show, delivering a strong lead in for our early evening newscasts and helping to launch new hits,” said Valari Staab, president of NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations.
The NBC-owned stations that have solidified the renewal deal with the show include affiliates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Miami, San Diego and Hartford, Connecticut.
“Day in and day out Ellen delivers the best show on television. Ellen and her team produce a completely unique and exciting hour, which is appointment television for viewers everywhere,” said Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution TV president Ken Werner.
Personally, I think this is great news for daytime TV. Ellen has long been a highlight, offering some of the more buzzworthy moments in daytime TV history (well, at least since Oprah left. And Ellen isn’t giving away cars to her entire audience). I think she’s really found her fit, proving herself to be a total natural in ways many daytime talk show hosts aren’t. A lot of celebrities get their own daytime talk shows, but few of them really find a way to make it work, as evidenced by The Jeff Probst Show and The Queen Latifah Show failing to catch fire with audiences.
Hell, just yesterday, The Meredith Vieira Show was canceled after two seasons, leaving a gap in the daytime schedule for NBC-owned stations. Some of the affiliates will fill time with local news broadcasts, which I suppose is good for the visibility of your local news team, although I’m not sure how many people are trying to watch the news at 4pm.
