Mitch McConnell Refuses To Condemn Donald Trump For Praising Putin
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stunned CNN host Jake Tapper on Sunday, when the GOP leader refused to condemn Donald Trump’s remarks that the United States is just like Vladimir Putin’s regime.
In an interview airing before the Super Bowl on Sunday, Trump told Bill O’Reilly about Putin: “I do respect him. Well, I respect a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean I’ll get along with them.”
Trump then excused Putin’s killing of journalists and political rivals: “There are a lot of killers. We have a lot of killers. Well, you think our country is so innocent?”
When pressed about Trump’s statements on Putin, McConnell said on CNN’s State of the Union:
“He is a former KGB agent, a thug, not elected in a way that most people consider a credible election. [on Putin] No, I don’t think there is any equivalency with the way the Russians conduct themselves and the way the United States does.”
But McConnell refused to condemn Trump’s statements saying:
“Look, Jake, I can speak to myself and I have about my feelings for Vladimir Putin. I’m not going to critique every utterance of the president.”
I am STUNNED by the hypocrisy. This man literally critiqued everything that President Obama did for the last 8 years. Shameful.
Words have power and words have meaning. Donald Trump is putting Putin ahead of the American people and the GOP is turning a blind eye. Trump has put the United States in a position of weakness by his continued deference to Putin.
