It’s Official: Mason Noise Will Replace Tom Bleasby on The X Factor UK 2015 Judges’ Houses

This is one of those rare instances where I’m kind of disappointed to have been right: Mason Noise will replace Tom Bleasby on The X Factor UK 2015 Judges’ Houses.

The decision to invite Mason back came after Tom quit the show following the Six-Chair Challenge, leaving judge Nick Grimshaw with only five singers to take with him to Judges’ Houses. Tom’s advancement to Judges’ Houses was controversial in itself, as he was initially cut from the Six-Chair Challenge, only to be brought back when fan outcry proved to be too great for Nick to ignore. However, the controversy surrounding Tom’s stint in the Six-Chair Challenge doesn’t hold a candle to what happened with Mason.

In one of the most uncomfortable meltdowns in the history of the show, Mason lashed out at Simon Cowell and the producers of the show for reducing his first audition to just 47 seconds. The argument devolved into a shouting match with Simon, and ended with Mason dropping his mic and storming off the stage.

“After Tom decided to leave the show, Mason was the person I wanted to bring back,” Nick revealed in a statement. “Yes he was difficult at the Six-Chair Challenge, but people with an artistic temperament can be difficult. He’s talented and in previous auditions excited us Judges. Sometimes a challenge is interesting.”

Mason added: “I appreciate Nick inviting me back on the show. And even more so, I appreciate the fact he understands what I am trying to achieve… challenge accepted!”

So Mason will now be the sixth singer in the Boys category at Judges’ Houses, joining Ben Clark, Ché Chesterman, Josh Daniel, Seann Miley Moore and Simon Lynch.

Ultimately, while I made the suggestion that Mason might be brought back, this is still disconcerting news, if only because his temperament is only likely to get worse the farther into the show he gets. It’s also a bit of a wasted opportunity for Nick. On the one hand, having a controversial guy like Mason could sound like a good idea for the headline-grabbing potential of his team. On the other hand, are people actually going to vote for this guy? Mason’s outburst was good for drama, and his advancement here is probably going to be just as controversial, but I don’t know if that translates into anything but resentment for Nick from the audience for bringing Mason back in the first place. And, really, with guys like Sean, Che, Josh, Simon, and Ben on his team, I don’t even think Nick needed to bring anyone back. I would argue he’s neck-and-neck with Rita right now for the best Judges’ Houses category, and that’s even without Tom or Mason.

Of course, in Nick’s defense, I can see why he didn’t bring back, say, Ollie Marland (the last guy to lose his chair). Nick had planned to give Mason a chair, but he was dismissed by Simon before Nick could really make that decision. In some ways, it makes more sense to give the sixth chair to someone who, unlike Ollie or any of the other boys who went home, never actually lost a seat. After all, if you weren’t good enough to keep your seat, how far could you possibly go anyway? Granted, we don’t know if Mason would have kept his seat had he not had that unfortunate outburst, but I can see why Nick would want to give him another chance, as unpopular a decision as that might be.
