‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spinoff in the Works, Third Season Virtually Guaranteed
Although Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has yet to be renewed for a third season, ABC is reportedly developing a spinoff of the series that would seem to suggest that a third season is virtually guaranteed. At least, that’s the phrasing from the good folks at Entertainment Weekly, who broke the story.
While it’s uncertain what the new series will be about, the current season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is split between two divergent S.H.I.E.L.D. factions. A proposed spinoff could follow the other, led by Edward James Olmos and staffed with TV mainstays like Adrianne Palicki and Henry Simmons. However, a spinoff could just as easily follow the faction of Inhumans whom Skye (Chloe Bennet) encounters. Hell, we could even get a Hydra series with Brett Dalton leading the charge, if they want to go full Suicide Squad and make a bad guys the focus.
The show is being developed by Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski. Since plans for the spinoff are coming right at the end of the season, there won’t be time for an embedded pilot to set up the series. Spinoffs like The Flash and NCIS: New Orleans came out of the gate strong thanks to setup episodes in the parent series (Arrow and NCIS, respectively), but unless this spinoff is a midseason show, it won’t have that advantage. Of course, if it is saved for midseason, there could be an episode to set it up early in season three of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., if it comes to it.
However, it should be noted just how tentative these plans are. If ABC orders a bunch of pilots it really likes for next season, they might not even have need for a Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, especially when you consider that, according to the report, Marvel’s Agent Carter has “a roughly 60 percent chance of returning for a second season” next year. Given how good Agent Carter ended up being, I really wouldn’t mind one bit if we just skipped over a new spinoff and stuck with her instead. Hayley Atwell is just terrific. That said, what I’d really love to see is some of the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars cameo in a Marvel movie. Agent May kicking ass on the big screen? Sign me the hell up.
So what do you think? Is a spinoff of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good idea? If so, what should it be about? Sound off in the comments!
