Marvel Reportedly Regains Rights to ‘Fantastic Four’, New Movie Set for 2020
After yet another disastrous attempt at rebooting Fantastic Four, Fox has reportedly decided to throw in the towel and give the rights back to Marvel, although not without certain compromises.
Basically, Marvel owns the TV rights to the X-Men, which Fox desperately wants. So, in exchange for being able to make TV the X-Men-themed shows Hellfire and Legion, Fox would give the Fantastic Four film rights back to Marvel. This will allow the Fantastic Four to be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s expected that this new Fantastic Four movie will arrive in 2020, which is just enough time for audiences to forget about the hot mess that was Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four.
It’s kind of early to speculate about who will be cast in which role, or even if the Fantastic Four in this iteration will be the younger or the more traditional adult versions of the characters, since the movie is still five years away, at best. But getting the Fantastic Four back could have huge implications for the MCU in the present, since Marvel would be getting back some major villains they can use after Thanos, such as Doctor Doom and Galactus. And hey, who knows? Marvel could pull a “Spider-Man In Captain America: Civil War” and introduce the new Fantastic Four far earlier than 2020 by having them cameo in an MCU movie.
In short, this is pretty exciting news, as it gives the Marvel Cinematic Universe a shot in the arm, particularly since it didn’t seem the least bit certain what Marvel would — or even could — do for Phase 4 of the MCU. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out.
But what do you think of the Fantastic Four rights reverting back to Marvel? Sound off in the comments!
