‘Mad Max’, ‘The Big Short’ Win Big At ACE Eddie Awards 2016
The American Cinema Editors have named their winners for the ACE Eddie Awards 2016, as the best-edited films and TV shows of 2015 have earned top honors.
Among films, The Big Short and Mad Max: Fury Road were the winners, putting them neck-and-neck for the Best Film Editing Oscar, for which they’re both nominated. Ignoring that Birdman broke a 30-year streak last year of every recent Best Picture winner requiring a Film Editing nomination to even be considered a possibility for winning the Academy’s top prize, the wins for Mad Max and The Big Short suggest that these two films are a lot stronger than presumed frontrunners The Revenant and Spotlight. The Big Short, in particular, has really had a late surge in guild support, having earned the Producers Guild Award for Best Picture, cementing its potential spoiler status in the top race at next month’s Academy Awards.
But it’s not just about movies, as TV shows were also honored. This year, Mad Men went out on top by earning the prize for Best Edited One-Hour Series for its final season. Meanwhile, Inside Amy Schumer surprised by winning the Best Edited Half-Hour Series for her bold, hilarious “12 Angry Men” episode. In short, while these picks aren’t likely to satisfy everyone, it’s hard to argue that each winner doesn’t have serious merit.
